It is undeniable that significant trend changes are underway for the screen printing industry. New technology and printing methods are developed and introduced in quick succession. Direct-To-Garment (DTG) printing is a popular trend boosted by the introduction of DTG digital printers. These printers are capable of printing designs from a computer program directly on fabrics. Since the designs are made through the computer, there is more flexibility in terms of color, contrast, and form. Many screen printing businesses are now adapting DTG printing as their primary printing methods and buying DTG printers. The most popular and latest DTG printer to date is the Brother GT-541 Inkjet Garment Printer
Since its introduction last June, the new Brother printer has exceeded expected sales. No wonder because GT-541 fits any garment business and has features that screen printing cannot match. However, Peter Holland, a Brother executive, stresses that GT-541 is not a replacement for the traditional printing methods. He prefers to treat GT-541 as an added feature to a printer's repertoire. The printer has a 14x16" design area and four ink cartridges capable of producing a color palette of 16 million. The machine operates like a desktop printer and prints 45 t-shirts in full power.
The new Brother printer is perfect for highly-customized shirts like league uniforms, fund raiser, and reunion shirts. An advantage of using the new printer is its use of inks which let the skin breathe. These inks are water-based unlike screen printing inks which are made with plastisol, a non-breathable substance. If comfort is the main concern, DTG printing is the best way to go.
