A Brief History: Plastisol Ink

Gene Krupinski, Florida branch manager for Advance Process Supply, once said that plastisol ink is a "lazy man's ink." What prompted Gene to say this is the user-friendly quality of plastisol inks which makes printing faster and easier, since it doesn't dry up in screens. In addition, plastisol ink does not allow mistakes because of its unique substance that is fit for t-shirt printing. In fact, plastisol ink is considered as the t-shirt ink and t-shirt paint because it works and blends perfectly well with the t-shirt fabric.

According to t-shirt history, people in the 1940s used airbrush or any water paint just to produce prints on t-shirts. But a lot of people don't like the risks and dangers of using airbrush. Most likely, people who use this material are prone to fires, since the material is flammable. Then in 1954, people started using plastisol ink as a material for t-shirt ink and printing. Who specifically discovered plastisol ink is a mystery. However, printing companies were the ones that formulated the possible use of plastisol ink for t-shirt printing.

The advent of plastisol ink as t-shirt ink made it possible for other clothes and printed garments to be available commercially. By the year 1960, a lot of businessmen switched from their old ink to plastisol ink since it was more practical and produces better quality print garments and t-shirts. On the other hand, Boelter, who is the President of Don Boelter Lithography of Hollywood, Calif., commented that his company was the first to have such concept since they created a t-shirt with an image of a hotdog in 1969 or 1970. Plastisol ink has changed the face of t-shirt printing industry. Ip to now, with new technologies everywhere, it continually adapts itself with the changes of time, and still come out as the number one t-shirt ink.
